Baby/mineral oil on hair, scalp, skin???

I have dry skin and baby oil makes my skin feel great. Because my scalp is really dry, one day I tried putting baby oil on my scalp and hair. It seems to work wonders (please note; I'm African American....this does make a difference as far as hair texture....others WOULD NOT benefit from putting baby oil on their hair). However, I've heard negative things about mineral oil, being that it comes from petroleum. We use many pure substances that come from or are associated with "bad things". Does anyone know or have an opinion on the use of baby oil on hair, scalp, and skin? We have been using it on babys for years, right?!

You are right. We have used it on babys forever. I use baby oil on my skin after I get out of the shower. If you like the feel of your hair and scalp when you use the baby oil then do it. Also there is some oil called Alpha Keri oil, I used it on my daughter when she had cradle cap (excessive dry skin on her head). I had to ask the pharmacist to order it, but it was not a prescription. Also, we use hot oil treatments on our hair all the time and it is the same thing. So, I don't think it will do any harm to you or your hair.

I wish you the best of luck.

You are clogging your hair shafts. I bet your hair grows slow. Try keeping the oil on the ends and try a clear color shine to make your hair feel healthy.

I actually have used baby oil and a comb to remove cradle cap from all four of my babies, and it worked miracles. It works well enough that, at least for occasional use, it's great as a scalp soother. If you want something for more regular use that's more, well, herbal, you might try aloe vera gel (for sun burns). I'd recommend you get the clear kind, not the green stuff! :)

I use baby oil on my hands, feet, elbows, and shins because I get dry, rough skin in those spots. I think it's a great product. If it was hazardous, the companies would be required by law to put that on the label. Provided, I wouldn't consume it, but if it's safe for babies' skin, why not use it?

I don't have any laboratory studies to back me up, but in my years as a Licenced Massage Therapist and Registered Nurse, my clients usually preferred plant based oils to mineral based products like baby oil or petroleum jelly. Almond oil was absolutely the favorite. You can buy a large variety of plant based oils at natural foods groceries; look in the cooking oil section rather than in with the health %26amp; beauty type products for larger volumes and better prices. I used to give clients of choice of scent to combine with their massage oil, and yes, my massages included scalp. Lavender combined with jasmine was the closest I got to "baby oil" fragrance.

(The ethnicity of my clients is about the mix you'd expect in my area: mostly whites, but at least 10% blacks.)
