Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Our hair is the most dryest thing on earth, straight hair has more OIL than our hair. Where did this stereotype come from?

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

I actually saw somethin about this on a talk show.. think it was Tyra. It was a race show, and a girl was saying she thought african americans had greasy hair (this is a paraphrased quote) "because when some black women get it done in salons they put a ton of product in that makes it really shiny. It looks greasy. Also, when they get it straightened, it gets shiny and looks greasy." An african american girl in the audience stood up and let the girl her touch her hair.. and the girl said it was soft, not greasy ;)

Most stereotypes like that stem from ignorance..

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

i think they are talking about jerry-curls. i agree with you tho that african americans have dry hair. stereotypes just come from comedians and other people.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Has to do with the skin i think. Same with mexicans or people with brown or olive colored skin like italians and and other darker skin tones. Thats why they use the word greaseball when throwing insult. But for the most part its just an insult. Dont pay much attention to them as they are just trying to insult peple and are just stupid.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

I don't know but I agree with you, African-American hair is usually very dry. However says otherwise is probaly stupid

I couldn't have said it any better than Kristen B! Great Answer!

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Certain amount of oil is good, but if thats a put down, it should be ignored.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

I hate stereotypes, but I think that it also comes from some peoples stupid assumptions about the moisturizers that used to be added to the hair during the 80's and 90's. When I was growning up in the area that I lived in, there were very few African Americans, so there were no places to buy hair products without a long drive. The cheap hair products that we had available did leave an oily residue in the hair. I know that I heard so many mean comments about staining the walls behind chairs during that time.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Because when you put grease all over yourselves so the hair won't fallout/break off and so the skin don't turn ashey the result is greasy. Plus certain ethnicities use ALOT of grease to cook. Been there, done that.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

maybe they probley get confused with people putting grease in their hair. Most people dont realize its not made that way haha

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Some people thing this because they think that since the native African hair was tougher than others that it must need more care products such as coconut oil to suit there hair type and those are the kinds that make hair more oily so that is probably the source of the stereotype.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

Remember the 80's. It started with the Jeri curl. I am 39 yrs of age and I remember the jeri curl when it came out. It was not until then that I remember African-Americans being stuck with the greasy hair stereotype. I guess if we had to blame someone we can start with Hollywood. Remember the movie "Coming to America." It stereotyped African Americans with the jeri curl spots on the sofa and the jeri curl spray bottle.

Why do some people say african-american is greasy?

It is because most people know they use gerri curl or vaseline to moisturize their very dry hair, and to be able to work with it. I am sure that you have noticed the stains on the back of the furniture from one who has either in their hair and has sat there. It isn't meant to be offensive.

I'm a young, cute african american princess with ALOPECIA.?

My first bald spot arrived at the tender age of 11 when my father passed away. Throughout my teen years bald spots came and went. Nothing really drastic. At the age of 20 my first born made herself known. I became semi-bald. I went to HCM to get a hair transplant (matrix). Where they had to shave the remaining to give me a glued on wig. I was dissapointed and after 3-6 mos I stopped going. My hair started to grow back soon after. Now I'm 25 and my second born just arrived. Now I'm totally bald as her bottom. I don't really want to go back to the matrix. Is there any medicine, shampoos anything out there I can use? Am I in the dark about anything? I feel like there's this magic alopecia pill that everyone's taking to have hair down their back and I'm stuck bald in the dark. Let me know.

PS- I'm newly single. Did I mention how big of a damper this can do to a young woman's self esteem?

I'm a young, cute african american princess with ALOPECIA.?

Alopecia can be autoimmune in nature...do you also have vitiligo, pernicious anemia or another autoimmune disease? I have a book called women and autoimmune disease by Robert Lahita,MD. There is a small section in there on alopecia. It seems that stress is playing a major part in your hair loss which is what makes me think it is autoimmune in nature. If you have a reputable rheumatologist in your area you could start there...in the mean time get a cute wig! the plus side of wigs is that you can change your style as often as you like!

I would go to a dermatologist for alopecia treatments. Also go to a regular dr to find out if you have any auto immune disorders that are the underlying cause of this. Don't just bandaid your problem, get to the bottom of it. Good Luck

Why does my hair get knots in it after I take down my hair?

By the way I`m an African American with relaxed hair.

Why does my hair get knots in it after I take down my hair?

Im puerto rican, and i guess we have similar hair.

Well i got my hair relaxed a few years ago, because it was extremely poofy and curly.

And when i wear it in a ponytail, it doesn't get tangley,

but when it's washed, and i but it in a ponytail and it drys,

it's like hell.

If your's is wet then that is probably why,

If not then a flat iron, and some Pink Oil should help.

Why does my hair get knots in it after I take down my hair?

because its one hair style for so long when you take it down the hair tye or whatever you used gets knoted in and then when you hair falls it gets tangeled because youv moved it from what it was. id suggest that when you style it take it dowon one section at a time and when your putting it up yous something that will make it a lil more softer. like "shine"(thats what its called)it comes in a clear bottel, it would help alot

My daughter and i r African American and want tight curls that will stay for months..what chemicals

we donot want hair extentions or weaves(daughter is 6) both of our hair is already long ..shoulder length...our hair is naturally curly when wet but when it drys ...afro city.....how can we keep dry curly, healty look?

My daughter and i r African American and want tight curls that will stay for months..what chemicals do we us?

You need Hair Milk by Carol's Daughter. It works like a charm for mosturizing and keeping curls.

My hair is the exact same way and this product as well as all of her others works great

My daughter and i r African American and want tight curls that will stay for months..what chemicals do we us?

wow, that is exactly how mu hair is. curly when wet and a bog fro when dry. anywho. . . you don't have to use chemicals to get tight curls. find a shop that does a straw set, they wrap your hair around straws, you can choose the size, and you get tight curls after you sit under the dryer. I don't know exactly what they put on the hair to get the curls to stay, but you should look into it. skinnier straws = tighter curls.

how bout perming your hair with curlers i guess

i really dont know

try it if you dare

There are curtain rollers that specify in that. that will save you money from going to the shop. When you wash your hair these curlers are sponge type and long. you wrap it up ward and spritz. You set under a dryer until your hair is dry because if you air dry it will frizz up. They have ouch less ones for the daughter!

By adding a hair oil hair creme or hair lotion to your hair.

Go and get a straw curls done. It takes a while to get it done because the roll your hair with plastic straws and when it is done you have the tightest curls that last. I don't know if your daughter can sit that long.

Question for African American woman only!?

My friend can't find good hair products. What do you recommend?

Question for African American woman only!?

Well first she should go to black hairstylist and speak with them about what she can do. Sally's Beauty Supply has a very nice stock of hair products of Black women. Also depending on how old she just may need to go through a trial and error period with her hair. Try out different things to see how her hair responds to different products and tools. For example, my friend can flat iron her hair everytime she washes it and its ok for her hair. I, on the otherhand can't do that. A flat iron can be too much heat and too intense for my hair causing it to break, so I prefer to roll and set it. It all depends on your grade of hair, with black women.

Question for African American woman only!?

Tell your friend to try

also tell her to go to her local hair supply store and ask the owner for her type of hair..the owners usually know what is best also the workers.

Does ANy African american women know what i can use to stop breakage?

I need a product that will help with hair growth and stop breakage? I use to dax tar grease when i was little, but i cant find it anywhere. Thanks

Does ANy African american women know what i can use to stop breakage?

I can tell you right off the bat to stop using dax tar grease. No one should ever use grease on their hair. Oils, pomades, and moisturizers only. I don't know your hair texture but mine is the kinkiest of the kinky. Greases do nothing except clog the scalp and prevent the sebum(oil produced naturally from our scalp) from reaching our hair and it stunts the hair growth.

you might want to try growth specifcs, its specifically made for alopecia patients but it works for everyone. While this product does work you hair will never grow to its full potential if your not properly taking care of it. Washing and deep conditoning once a week and using light scalp oils on your hair and scalp.

Does ANy African american women know what i can use to stop breakage?

to stop breakage and maximize growth you need to minimize manipulation in your hair. Get it braided so you can't comb, brush or add heat to your hair. If you have a relaxer, try to streatch you relaxers to at least 6 months apart. Your hair will thank you!!!! Also research on the web.
