I disagree with Big Peter Johnson. More men I know like the darker complected dark hair gilrs. And as for the african american women wanting to be white, I don't think that's true. Just because they want their hair strait doesn't mean they want to be white. When we get perms (80's) we aren't trying to be african american, we just want our hair different. Maybe they think that straitening their hair would make them stand out, look different, etc. Everyone get sick of the same old same old, that's why fashion and hairstyles change yearly!!

First of all what ridiculous amount of money are we spending?? $60 a couple times a year doesn't seem that much to ME. And why do you say WHITE??? SO white people are the only ones with straight hair?? Last time I checked, a lot of curly haired WHITE people STRAIGHTEN their hair- flat irons ring a bell??? Asians have straighter hair than white people- why didn't you say black people want to be ASIAN?? And do white people want to be hispanic so they get tans??!

Let me educate you since you are sooo stupid but think you are smart:

Black people were born with super curly hair. This hair is usually very soft(though it may appear otherwise) and breaks very easily. Braids were created so that black people didn't have to worry about combing their hair and then having it break.

Relaxers seemed to be the answer because not only was it a new look, but hair could be combed/styled easily.

I know **A LOT** of black girls who keep their natural curly hair, including some celebs like Tracee Elis Ross, Indie Arie, Jill Scott, and Ereka Badu(please excuse any misspellings)

And, the reason why some people of African descent intensely dislike themselves is because of CENTURIES OF OPPRESSION. Since before 1492, when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue up until now, oppression has psychologically affected people. There are also many individuals that are proud of their natural hair texture, as well. In addition, people of African descent are multicultural. Our hair textures vary from super thick to bone straight, curly and wavy. Many Black Americans are mixed with Native American and European. People of African descent have mixed with other cultures, ethnicities and backgrounds for centuries. Others, such as Blacks from the Caribbean, are mixed with Asian. And Ethiopians and Somalians are African, and many have curly, wavy, straight and course hair textures. Our hair is versatile. We have so many styling options. Dominicans also spend ridiculous amounts of money on hair straightening products, and the Japanese are also known for their hair straightening process. African Americans aren't the only ones who straighten their hair. Indians have course, frizzy hair, as well! Take for example, the Siddis. Some Irish have massive amounts of frizzy, curly, course hair. Regardless of nationality, hair textures are diverse.

They have the OPTION to have straight hair. Newsflash... white women are not the only standard of beauty in America. So move on and get educated. I have worked with Black women during my career and they love being black and they love the fact that they can change their hair for fashion or desire.
