Colorism in the African,Asian, and Latin American cultures?

I dealt with Colorism since I was a kid. My grandmother told me "don't stay out in the song too long" whenever I went out to play. And the kids at my school used to call me "bougy" and white-washed because I spoke "proper" and I had wavy long hair. Has anyone dealt with this kind of racsim? Why does it still exsist?

Colorisim as described in your question is unfortunately a byproduct of the institutional racism that exists in America. I do not know your ethnic background but would guess that you are of African descent. Blacks in America have been deemed unattractive since slavery began in America. I have learned that this was a tactic used to control the slaves. Too many mulatto children have been and will be born in the world for this to be true. In addition, blacks fed into the whole idea that the closer you were to appearing white or being light skinned the more attractive you were thought to be. This is what is commonly referred to as the light/dark skinned debate in black America. Many blacks were denied entry into black social clubs and institutions of higher education if they could not pass the paper bag test meaning if they were darker than a standard paper grocery bag they would not be granted entry into the school or organization. This is one of many sad and unfortunate testaments to how the American institutionalization of racisim has impacted American society generations after slavery ended. In order for things to change you and I have to accept and appreciate that God created all people and that we are all beautiful in His sight. Another explination could be pure jealousy. Because blacks have perpetuated this light/dark skinned mess many young black men prefer the light skinned so called good hair having girls. I would bet that the people giving you the most problems have been darker skinned girls/women that are not happy with their own appearance because they have not been taught that black is beautiful.

You know you should read more on the subject by reading a book called "The Color Complex". Report It

Racism exists everywhere people live. It still exists because mainly people are scared of things that are different from what they are used to or consider normal.

anything that's fed will grow.some still feed in to the sickness of racism.some people are jealous, some people are just mean.I believe the next generation of kids ,will help to end racism.Ido believe the children of today see more diversity and accept these differences as normal. These children need to be fed the right foods for thought and they will change the world of tomorrow.

Racism, or bigotry against those who appear different than the socially accepted norm, has existed in all societies; bar none.

Insanity. I hear the same crap as did my wife and so does my kid. But "skinism" is a two way street; blacks with light skin and straighter hair discriminated against dark skinned blacks for years. Not far from my house is a black church that for decades wouldn't let dark skinned blacks attend. Why does it still happened? 300 years of behavior beaten into you is difficult to overcome.

Colorism in the African,Asian, and Latin American cultures?

yes I dealt with it

it's because light skinned and white skinned were deemed to be the most appreciated of the races. People often thought they were the most accepted and pretty of the races. I even cautioned my daughter about the sun so that she would be accepted. Yes it's wrong but society still does it and think it. But that don't make it right.

May I interject as an outsider I see colorism inside the black community and even discrimination against those that "speak proper" as poison for the race as a whole.

You have those that epouse you as a race traitor for "acting white" because of your proper speech, but isn't it shown that unless you are an athlete or musician that this is how to succed in the world. There is nothing white about acting educated rather than presentng yourself as intentionally ignorant.

As far as colorism based soley on skin tone I ask you this. How can blacks as a hole further the advancement of all blacks when they argue amongst themselves over things so petty. Seems like wasted energy to me.

If it comes down to it take the abuse and deal with it, education and proper speech will pay off in the long run for you.
