Do I take good enough care of my relaxed hair?

So Im and African American girl and I've been relaxing my hair for about 5 or 6 years now. At night I put it up in a VERY LOOSE french braid and wrap a scarf around it. I wash it every week to week and a half (only bc I have dandruff). And only use heat to straighten it after washing it (blow dryer then flat iron). Plus I trim it every 2 to 3 months taking off about 1-2 inches. And I use home relaxers.

My hair is now about 5-6 in past my shoulders. I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing to ensure that I have healthy hair. And also how do you take a break from relaxers w/o pulling the new growth causing hair loss.

I don't know much about dandruff, but is sounds like you're doing a good job with your hair. Water is moisture, so if you can wash it twice a week without exacberating the dandruff, that might be better. Consider a no-poo (see the motowngirl link below) - cleansing with a conditioner only since conditioners do cleanse but not as much as shampoos and thus don't strip too much of your hair's natural oils.

Just remember to always treat it gently, keep the ends in particular moisturized, satin scarves are preferable and make sure that you're only relaxing new growth. Also, although I have no particular issue with mineral oil, lots of people think it's damaging and you can find much better products for your hair. Try Carol's Daughter's Hair Milk or shea butter, for instance.

Stretching your relaxer without causing too much breakage is doable if you're careful. You'll eventually figure out how long your hair can last before it really starts to break off and what works in the meantime to take care of it. Some people straighten the roots with heat, while others go for braid outs, gently pull their hair back, cornrows, braids (but be gentle on the baby hairs in front) etc.

These are some really good websites on Black hair care that I really think you'd find helpful. Go through them and you'll definitely find the answers to many of your questions regarding hair there.

You'll also find info on taking care of your ends so that you don't have to trim off 2 inches if you prefer not to.

It sounds like you're taking great care of your hair. You don't have to take a break from the relaxers, but if you want to I don't see any reason why you would have hair loss? New growth is sometimes itchy at first, but it's healthy, undamaged hair. Just flat iron the roots to make it look like the rest of your hair. You know to always use thermal sprays :-)
