i am african-american, and i use pantene for curly/frizzy hair, use dark and lovely moisture conditioner, and after i dry it, its really poofy and thick. after i flat iron it (straighten it), it looks ok, but not how i want it to be. am i doing something wrong? using the wrong products?

do u blow dry? well i notice that if i blow my dry hair Completely and then straighten, my hair is pretty dang poofy. but if i blow dry half way and let it air dry, and i start straightening it when it is Almost dry, it seems to work better. also u need to use some type of hair serum to protect it from the heat, because if it is too dry it will not straighten correctly. also what u can do is after u blow dry/air dry, u can twist it up into a bun for awhile to take some Poof out, and when u straighten it is much better texture. good luck!

Try using a straightening product (straightening cream/gel/mouse/etc.), and a glaze like John Frieda color glaze for sleak shine. If you are desperate, consider getting your hair shaved at the salon...they shave off some of the layers of your hair to de-poof it. My friend did that, and her hair looked so sleak! Good luck!

try the loreal brands....i cant remember which one i m using now but its an orange bottle and its fantastic! its a bit on the expensive side but u only need to use about a 10-cent coin worth (thats how the sales girl explained it to me) cos its really concentrated so it lasts a long time.
also, b sure to use some hair products on yor hair before you straighten as that will help minimise the poof and also protect your hair from burning.

I am Caucasian and also have thick, curly (frizzy) hair. I've been letting it curl naturally in an afro but am not happy with that so I use the curling iron to (not straighten it) ...just to have less frizzy curls....it's rather short...and I think growing it longer would help. I spray each strand with water before I use the curling iron. I use Pantene too....also Matrix sleek look and Frizz Ease DownPlay (to get rid of some of the bulk). I would never use a flat iron....that would just emphasize how thick it is. Hope this helps.

well if you add layers like the first person said, this will reduce the thick and puffy problem. you should use a straightening product (i.e. john frieda) if the hair is frizzy. but getting a layered cut will certainly help.

You could try a leave in conditioner(not sure which would be good for your hair) and then VO5 straight hair.
When I use the VO5 straight hair, I put it on when my hair is damp, blow dry, and then use flat iron over and over pieces of my hair.

Your hair is hard to manage, you should try new hair products that are a little more expensive (maybe they help)..ask in hair salons for samples... and try using a steam iron (they do miracles with all hair types) which work better on curly/poofy hair.

Try a better straightener. By your description, it sounds like you have really gorgeous hair. I know, you're thinking "Who is this person, are they crazy" but if you do the right things than it can look perfect. Also, how do you dry it? DO NOT DRY IT WITH A HAIR DRYER!!!! Use a towel. It doesn't dry as well, but it will minimum the poofyness that a hair dryer could never do.

First, always apply a moisturizer before you blow dry your hair. Like pink oil moisturizer or non-frizz glaze. That will lock in the moisture and prevent frizz. Second, use a vent brush when you blow dry your hair.(the brush with slits in the back, ask about it at the beauty salon) Put the blowdryer behind the vent brush and do even strokes with the brush in one hand and the blowdryer in the other. This makes your hair straighter than just blow drying by itself. When blowdrying, retrace your strokes but go a different way, like if you are blowdrying the right side of your head, blow dry up for a few strokes, then blow dry down. That way you know you are fully drying your hair. Third, when you are straightening your hair, get as close to your scalp as you can (which is normally about 1/2 inch) and slide straighteners down evenly, dont stop or you'll get unwanted bends. Turn the irons inward slightly when you are a couple inches from the bottom. Dont forget to wrap your hair at night with a silk scarf. That prevents breakage which makes your hair look thickers in some spots.
I really hope this helps :)

Hi. I'm naturally curly too. I normally keep my hair in 2 strand twist or box braids but I have a multitude of sites that you may want to check out to help you manage and maintain your hair. BTW - my hair is super thick so I feel your pain.
